Zuckerberg plans to unify WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger’s underlying messaging infrastructure

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly planning to to integrate WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger’s underlying technical infrastructure, allowing people to communicate across the platforms for the first time.

According to a report by nytimes.com, four people involved in the effort said that the services will remain as stand-alone apps but their underlying technical infrastructure will be unified.

The move reportedly seeks to reconfigure how WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger function at their most basic levels.

Zuckerberg has ordered to incorporate end-to-end encryption to protect messages from being viewed by anyone except the participants in a conversation, according to the people involved in the effort.

The incorporation of the services will increase Facebook’s utility and engagement within its ecosystem, giving users fewer reasons to turn to rival services such as those offered by Google and Apple.
