Globe Telecom has maintained its dominance in mobile data business in the first quarter of the year after posting mobile data revenues of P4.4 billion, double the combined revenues of its competitors at P2.2 billion.
As of March 2015, Globe mobile data revenues significantly grew by 58% from previous year’s P2.8 billion and by 8% from previous quarter’s P4.1 billion. Meanwhile, combined mobile Internet revenues of Smart and Sun rose by 19 percent to P2.2 billion from P1.9 billion in the same three months of last year.
“This phenomenal growth of our mobile data business is reflecting of our position as the purveyor of the Filipino digital lifestyle. The surge in mobile data services was spurred by the impact of our data adoption strategies from our Free Facebook and Free Viber campaigns, as well as the growing smartphone and mobile browsing adoption among our customers,” shares Dan Horan, Senior Advisor for Consumer Business at Globe.
Driving the growth of its mobile data business were the telco’s partnerships with global content providers to enrich the customer experience amid the growing propensity for multimedia applications on their devices. Globe has partnered with Google, Facebook, Viber, Spotify, NBA, HOOQ, and WhatsApp to structure offers that aim to further seed mobile data adoption among its customers.
Sustaining its digital roadmap this quarter, Globe continues to enhance the Filipino digital lifestyle experience with its comprehensive and multi-year collaboration with The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia. This collaboration is set to give Filipino customers access to video-on-demand, interactive content, promotions and other related services across multiple devices and affirms the relationship of Globe with Disney whose brands include Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and global leader in short-form video, Maker Studios.
Globe customers will soon have access to an array of Disney content offerings including long- and short-form programming, interactive content and games, theatrical releases and retail promotions. Offerings include Disney Movies On Demand, Disney On Demand, Maker On Demand, Disney Channel apps, Disney Interactive as well as a series of promotions, merchandising, and retail activations that will bring Disney’s latest theatrical releases closer to Filipinos.
“We believe that this business model is the most appropriate path for us to meet the changing needs of our customers as the world of data becomes more pervasive in their lives. With the growing adoption to more connected devices, Globe expects its mobile data business to create deep revenue streams for the company in both the near and long-term period,” Horan added.
Horan also added that the impressive performance of the company’s mobile data business was a result of a better network experience with 100% 3G and 4G HSPA+ nationwide coverage as well as the increasing pervasiveness of its LTE network around the country. To enhance its wireless network infrastructure, Globe is activating more cell sites with the LTE-TDD and LTE-FDD ultra broadband access technologies for a more pervasive LTE coverage nationwide.
