Mobile Ransomware More Than Trebled in Q1, 2017

In a related development, results of Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) also revealed nearly three-in-10 Filipinos were infected with mobile threats in the first quarter of 2017.

The report showed the Philippines ranked eighth on the list of countries most attacked by mobile malware with 27.98% of unique users attacked. This is a six-point jump from 2016’s third quarter statistics at 21.67%.

The percentage is relative to all users of Kaspersky Lab’s mobile security products in the country.

Iran scored the highest percentage of users attacked by mobile malware at 47.35%. Bangladesh came second with 36.25% of users who encountered a mobile threat at least once during the quarter. It was followed by Indonesia and China whose shares were slightly over 32% each.

Nepal ranked sixth at 29.90%, followed by India (29.09%) and Algeria (28.64%). The ninth and tenth places were for Nigeria (27.81%) and Ghana (25.85%).

The safest countries in terms of mobile threats were Finland (2.7%), Georgia (2.5%) and Japan (1.5%).

Other online threat statistics from the Q1, 2017 report include:

● Kaspersky Lab solutions detected and repelled 479,528,279 malicious attacks from online resources located in 190 countries all over the world.

● 79,209,775 unique URLs were recognized as malicious by web antivirus components.

● Attempted infections by malware that aims to steal money via online access to bank accounts were registered on 288,000 user computers.

● Crypto-ransomware attacks were blocked on 240,799 computers of unique users.

● Kaspersky Lab’s file antivirus detected a total of 174,989,956 unique malicious and potentially unwanted objects.

● Kaspersky Lab mobile security products also detected:

o 1,333,605 malicious installation packages;
o 32,038 mobile banking Trojans (installation packages).

To reduce the risk of infection, users are advised to:

● Use robust security solutions and make sure they keep all software up to date.
● Regularly run a system scan to check for possible infection.
● Stay wise while online. Do not enter personal information into a website if you are at all unsure or suspicious.
● Back up valuable information.
