Campaign vs fraudsters intended to enhance customer protection.
Globe Telecom’s intensified campaign against fraudsters bore fruit once again with the arrest of three suspects involved in the illegal sale of the company’s LTE Tattoo modems.
A recent buy-bust operation conducted by a joint police and Globe security team led to the arrest of Nestor Piga, a 24 year-old technician, residing at No.93 Labao St., Purok 1, Barangay Napindan, Taguig City and Marvin Dela Rosa, 26 years old and a resident of No. 13 Labao St. Purok 1, Barangay Napindan, Taguig City.
The entrapment operation was based on a list of online sellers of Globe LTE modems. Responding to inquiry through the OLX.com.ph, suspects agreed to meet police personnel posing as buyers. This eventually led to the arrest of Piga and Dela Rosa.
The two suspects are believed to be engaged in a modus operandi that involves retrieval of LTE modems from legitimate customers on pretext of an upgrade or repair. The modems are then reconfigured and sold at a one-time cost payment in popular social online buy-and-sell sites such as OLX and even networking sites such as Facebook. Police recovered from the suspects one (1) unit of Globe LTE modem, two (2) units of Globe Super Home phone and one (1) LTE antenna.
In a separate buy-buy operation, police also recently arrested Regine Punto, 31 years old, a freelance computer technician, residing at No. 32-A Sta. Catalina St. Quezon City. Based on the police report, Punto is involved in illegal sale of LTE modems through OLX.com.ph. Items that were recovered from Punto include two (2) units of Globe LTE modems, two (2) units of LTE antenna, and other related items. Appropriate criminal charges were filed against the three suspects.
Globe Telecom’s intensified campaign versus fraudsters is intended to protect its customers from illegal activities involving its products and services. “We appeal to customers to entertain offers of various Globe products and services only from those coming from legitimate agents, “said Ronald Uychutin, Globe Senior Director for Security and Anti-Fraud and Investigation Division. Uychutin emphasized the company will continue to work closely with police authorities in pursuing fraudsters.
The company’s campaign against fraudsters complements an online advocacy of the telecommunications provider for its customers to step up their online vigilance so they can better protect themselves from becoming victims of online hacks, identify theft and other cybercrimes.
As the leading provider of digital services on mobile devices, Globe took the task of educating and protecting its customers from online security threats through its Protech101 campaign. The campaign tackles the issues of weak passwords, the dangers of the auto-fill feature, online sharing of information, and awareness on new software and other factors that make an account unstable and vulnerable to danger.
