United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his concern over the growing power of social media companies and suggested that a global regulations should be put in place. Guterres added that a ‘serious discussion’ should be made about the issue.
Guterres said that a ‘mechanism’ should be created where a regulatory framework or guidelines will be followed.
“I do not think that we can live in a world where too much power is given to a reduced number of companies,” Guterres said at a news conference.
As an example, Twitter closed the account of former US President Donald Trump while Facebook, Instagram and Youtube suspended Trump’s account.
Gutteres also expressed his concern over the overwhelming data being collected by the companies and how it is being used for marketing purposes.
