The Department of Transportation & Communications (DOTC) and Smart Communications, Inc. signed a P1-billion partnership agreement on Wednesday July 12, that will bring enhanced WiFi access to passengers of key transport hubs nationwide.
Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and PLDT and Smart Chairman, President, and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan signed the agreement.
“Passengers will now enjoy free WiFi connections during their stay in various transport hubs. We aim to provide high standards and better services to the public,” said DOTC secretary Arthur Tugade.
Enhanced internet access will be provided to important transport hubs including airports, sea ports, train stations, and bus terminals.
According to Smart, WiFi speed will be 10 times faster, at par with international standards of 1Gbps.
“We thank our partner, Smart, for supporting the government’s thrust to make passengers’ travel experience more comfortable, convenient and connected,” said Tugade.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding, Smart will operate and maintain the WiFi facility at no cost to the government. The telecom company has determined important transport hubs nationwide in which the project will be implemented.
The deal though is not limited to Smart as Tugade said that other companies are also welcome to collaborate with the government.
