Google will not be renewing its contract with the US Air Force program where artificial intelligence (AI) is used to identify objects with their technology, considered by critics as a step toward fully autonomous weapons that hunt and kill targets without human supervision.
As reported by CNN Tech, Google will not be pursuing weapons or technologies with purpose to cause harm, surveillance technologies that violate international norms, and AI technologies that violate human rights.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said: “How AI is developed and used will have a significant impact on society for many years to come.”
“As a leader in AI, we feel a deep responsibility to get this right,” he added.
Google, however, will still be working with the military and governments for cybersecurity, training, recruiting and veterans’ health care.
