Global smartphone sales continued to fall on the second quarter of 2019 by 1.7%, totaling 368 million units after six consecutive quarterly declines.
According to a report by Gartner, most smartphone companies continued to decline sales on Q2 including tech giant Apple. Despite the overall decrease in smartphone sales, companies such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei exhibited increases for the said quarter.
This was after the announcement of Huawei ban which led to its sharp decline but sales later improved after the ban has been deferred.
Samsung meanwhile retained its position as the top of the table as there has been strong demand for its new Galaxy A series smartphones and the revamp of its entire entry-level and midrange smartphone range. However, the demand for its flagship Galaxy S10 started to weaken which is an indication that its growth for the whole 2019 will be a challenge according to Gartner senior research director Anshul Gupta.
Gupta stated: “Demand for high-end smartphones has slowed at a greater rate than demand for midrange and low-end smartphones.”
“To try to boost smartphone replacements, we’ve seen manufacturers bringing premium features such as multilens front/back cameras, bezel-less displays and large batteries from their flagship smartphones into lower-priced models,” he added.
Gartner said that the smartphone sales for the rest of the year will “remain weak”.
