‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Super Mario Kart’ make it to Video Game Hall of Fame

‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Super Mario Kart’ were among the newly inducted video games that made it to the 2019 World Video Game Hall of Fame.

According to a news release by the National Museum of Play, ‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Super Mario Kart’ alongside Colossal Cave Adventure, Microsoft Windows Solitaire have been inducted into the hall of fame among 12 finalists.

The museum stated that the new inductees “span multiple decades, countries of origin, and gaming platforms, but all have significantly affected the video game industry, popular culture, and society in general.”

‘Mortal Combat’ which was launched in 1992 has established an entire franchise apart from games such as music albums, action figures, a theatrical stage show, and Hollywood movies.

Racing game ‘Super Mario Kart’ meanwhile has sold millions of copies on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and sold 100 million units of its other titles across consoles, handhelds, and arcade games.

Card game ‘Microsoft Solitaire’ has been around since 1990, first on the Windows 3.0 computing platform while ‘Colossal Cave Adventure’ which debuted in debuted in 1976 has become a well-loved text-based game that let players work their imagination.
