Philips announces Hue motion sensor for hands-free lighting

Philips is unveiling a new motion sensor that will make it easier for Hue owners to turn on lights in their homes without the need of any switch or their hands.

The Hue motion sensor is a small white device with two AAA batteries. It can be placed or mounted anywhere using a double-sided tape.

Here’s how it works, it will let you select which lights to turn on when it detects movement, as well as how long will lights stay on when everyone has left. If you want to save energy, you can also configure it to turn on lights only when a room is dark.

The device can detect movement from up to 16.5 feet away and Philips said that you can reduce its motion detecting range. However, the motion sensor doesn’t have a setting for limiting motion sensitivity, so your pets can also trigger it to turn on the lights.

Philips’ new motion sensors will become available in October for a price of $39.95.
