Google unveiled Duo, its new video calling app for smartphones, in an effort to make video calling between two people easier.
According to its blog post, the Google Duo is a simple 1-to-1 video calling app that enables two people to catch up with each other without having to worry about whether the call will connect or if they’re using the same type of device.
Google’s main selling point for Duo is its simplicity. To start the app, you will only need your phone number and after a simple sign up process, you can instantly begin a video call with any of your friends located on your contacts list.
Duo is also created to be fast and reliable, meaning video calls will connect quickly and work well even when the network is slow. For example, the app will reduce the video call resolution when the connection is limited to keep the call going smoothly. For on the go video calls, Duo can switch seamlessly between Wi-Fi and cellular data without dropping the call.
Even though the Duo is marketed as a simple app, it does have a unique feature called Knock Knock, which allows you to view live video of your caller before picking up the call. You will only receive Knock Knocks from people in your contact list and if you don’t want it, you can disable it completely.
If you’re worrying about security, Google said that Duo calls are end-to-end encrypted.
Google Duo will roll out on Android and iOS in the next few days.
