Google’s Android operating system dominated Apple’s iOS in terms of smartphones shipped in the third quarter of 2016.
According to Strategy Analytics’ latest research, 87.5 percent of smartphones shipped in 3Q 2016 run on Android OS while only 12.1 percent run on iOS. Other mobile platforms comprised the remaining 0.3 percent.
“Android leadership of the global smartphone market looks unassailable at the moment. Its low-cost services and user-friendly software remain attractive to hardware makers, operators and consumers worldwide,” Strategy Analytics Director Woody Oh said in a statement.
However, Oh is aware that the Android OS is still facing some challenges. According to Oh, the Android platform is becoming overcrowded and Google’s new Pixel smartphone is attacking its own hardware partners that made Android popular in the first place.
