Google tries a more mobile-friendly search index

Google on Friday (November 4, 2016) announced that they have started experiments to make their search index mobile-first.

In a Google Webmaster blog post, the tech giant said that their algorithms will now look at the mobile content of a site to rank pages and understand structured data. Google did say that users on desktop devices will not be left behind even amid the announced shift.

Google will use the months ahead to experiment the move. Once the company is confident that they have a great user experience, they will expand the mobile-first index into an even wider scale.

The company thinks that the mobile-first shift is necessary as most people now use mobile devices to search on Google.
