Steven Spielberg wants Netflix titles banned from Oscars

Director Steven Spielberg will reportedly propose to ban Netflix titles as well as other companies that release movies on both streaming platforms and theaters from the Oscars.

In a report by variety.com, Spielberg who is one of the Academy’s board of governors, is expected to propose the changes in the rules when the board meets in A

Spielberg said in his interview with ITV: “Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie. You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”

However, some members oppose Spielberg’s position on Netflix’s exclusion from the award-giving body, including Academy member and veteran publicist Stu Zakim who has worked on some of the director’s releases.

Zakim said: “As much as I respect Steven and revere him as a filmmaker, he’s not reading the tea leaves. That ship has sailed.”

Netflix’s “Roma” won big at the recently held 91st Academy Awards, winning three Oscars including Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Foreign Language Film with seven other nominations including Best Picture which was won by “Green Book”.
